Samsung seem to be trying their best to build the best technology in the phone market that consumers want to buy. They’ve been trying various different platforms on their phones including Windows Mobile, Symbian and Vodafone 360. This time, on their new phone the Samsung Galaxy Portal, they’re using Google Android as the platform. Let’s look into this phone a bit more.
The phone allows the use of a MicroSD card to maximise the storage capacity – Which is a good job actually because the phone onlt has a mere 180MB of internal storage. Compared to most smartphones on the market today, this is really low. Phones such as the iPhone, leading the market, have an 8GB storage allowance.
The screen size isn’t too bad, though. With a display of 3.2 inch, it doesn’t look too bad except for the fact that Samsung have downgraded the quality a little – They’ve moved to TFT technology rather than OLED which they’ve used in the past. This means the colours don’t show as nicely and the screen is more difficult to see in the sunlight. This is just one of the main ways Samsung have managed to cut the costs down on their Galaxy Portal phone.
The phone also has a 3.2 megapixel camera. Again, Samsung’s cost-cutting measures can definitely be seen – Although the quality of the images aren’t too bad, the quality of them just isn’t the same as we’ve seen in the past from other Samsung phones. Photos do look quite grainy in places and not as vibrant as you would expect.
Samsung have however not downgraded everything from previous phones. In the Samsung Galaxy phone, a processor running at 528MHz was used which meant that sometimes the phone could be quite slow. In the Samsung Galaxy Portal, though, they’ve upgraded this to an 800MHz, making the phone much more usable and quicker.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a decent, usable phone running Google Android, you may want to try out the Samsung Galaxy Portal. Due to certain features being downgraded slightly, I believe you can get this phone for just £20 a month on a contract, which really isn’t bad at all. It all depends on how important a good quality camera, a decent display and a big storage capacity is when you’re using your mobile phone.

I tend to usually have a Samsung mobile, They are very simple to use and have some really good features their phones do just get better and better and I will carry on to purchase Samsung products.
I was initially very skeptical about buying a samsung mobile as they are pretty new to the mobile world, but after I bought Samsung corby which I use now, I became pretty confident that they got some good quality products under their belt.
Cell phone are the best options to carry your data ow a days, A cell phone can work in multi propose, one can carry the data, carry many songs video etc, even you can send as well as receive data by accessing your mail account through GPSS
Very Cool, one can carry the data, carry many songs video etc, even you can send as well as receive data.
Yeah, I have tried various Samsung phones and have taken a hard look at the Android as well but at the end of the day I still luv my iPhone. There are things about it that drive me crazy but being able to so easily show my clients photos from the phone and flip through them has been a big plus.
Looks like a great phone, but the one question i have is: Is it better than a iPhone? It does have a great OS which is going somewhere, but which should you buy right now?
I’v had my new samsung galaxy portal for about 2 weeks now and being a bit of a tech phobe (having had a d900 for 3 years lol) i’m just getting used to it and i’m lovein it, but i can’t seam to work out how to forward text messages to my other contacts and it is driving me all the more up the wall because i can’t do it, so if anyone can help me i would be very happy.
i like this phone. its quality and low price
This phone does not seem to be very competitive in the msart phone market but if its priced correctly it may be a good affordable solution to the more expensive line of phone with greater compatibilites
Samsung products are awesome and i am glad they are injecting some competition into the phone market.
I think its great they decided to use the Android platform and I think the consumers will probably more readily accept it than when they tried previously with the Vodafone 360, Windows Mobile etc. The phone may well still struggle however because of the launch of the new iPhone and the Google phone/HTC….Good to see samsung have bought this out however – Im sure it’ll be a better price than other phones on the market!
I love Samsung Galaxy, with the internet in mind, Galaxy offers you a revolutionary, all-in-one mobile experience. The Android platform provides seamless access to the full suite of Google services and allows customization like never before. Its large AMOLED offers unmatched luminescence and vivid colours for High Definition display, providing a sight and touch experience that’s out of this world. At a slim 11.9 mm, Galaxy is the thinnest Android device on the market today. Stylish, slender, and easy to use, Galaxy puts the universe in the palm of your hand
To be quite frank, I have been very hesistant in the past to cross over to a Samsung but you all convinced me. Im getting a Samsung.
My best phone was a Sony Ericsson, now use a Samsung similar to this is a great phone but does not compare to my old one. Great post.
I’m still a bigger fan of the Iphone these days. Bigger harddrive, better app support, and soon to be had video chat. Apple doesn’t make a perfect product, but it’s still the most functional.
I,ve always bought samsung phones, I find the quality allot better than most phones which are on the market.
I even have a samsung LCD TV because of the pure quality of the picture.
I used to have a Samsung phone, but years ago. They’ve really lost ground to Blackberry and iPhone, even ITC.
