If you’re currently in the United Kingdom, the highest connection speed you can currently get is through Virgin Media. They offer 3 different packages – 10Mb/s, 20Mb/s and 50Mb/s. They already have plans to release a 100Mb/s connection by the end of the year, which will blast all of it’s competitors out of the water.
This 100Mb/s connection has and is currently being tested in specific locations in the United Kingdom. I believe Kent is one of the chosen demo’d locations. Unfortunately, I don’t live there and so haven’t been able to test it (I’m on the highest package available publicly, 50Mb/s). I’m not sure what the people of Kent think of it so far.
However, they just announced today that starting tomorrow, they will be testing out an even quicker connection – 200Mb/s! This is a huge improvement and will provide ultra quick internet! Once again, it’s only going to be demo’d in specific locations until the public release. The chosen destination for the demo’ing of the 200Mb/s internet is Coventry, I believe. Unfortunately, Virgin Media couldn’t give any details on when this package would be available to it’s consumers around the country.
It’s really quite amazing at the speed that internet is increasing at. In the United Kingdom at least, Virgin Media seem to be leading the progression. I’m not quite sure on the speeds people are able to get around the world, but I do believe that places such as the United States and Japan may already connections at this speed. Lucky you.
The Government in the United Kingdom are also considering funding the development of internet connections to try and give up to 90% of the United Kingdom access to the internet. Whether the funding will actually help this or not is another matter, however. What I can see firms doing with it is either taking it into their pockets or just spending it on making their internet speeds quicker to make packages more competitive, instead of spending it on trying to reach further parts of the countries.

This would be really amazing. I’m on Virgin right now and would love to see these kind of speeds…let’s hope BT actually are able to provide the infrastructure to cope with it. My broadband is meant to be 20 megabits a second here but that is a joke it is really much less. Nevermind…I guess we’ll never catch up with Japan!
That is amazing. What type of technology underpins this? It would be awesome if something similar came to Australia.
The technology is probably a combination between fyber wire and some kind of sattellite connection. It would be great to have such speed over the internet, but you don’t actually need that unless you want to download something… and you can’t download something with a 200 Mb/s speed unless the location you are downloading from supports that amd I sincerely doubt that many such locations exist. My opinion is that such speed is useless unless you have other places that use such a technology.
Realistically why does anyone need such a fast at home. For file sharing? Think of the power botnets will now have based on the compromise of consumer PC’s.
That is stunning! and it would be four times faster than the speeds they are currently providing. I doubt if an average user actually needs this speed, and the pricing would definitely be high up.
Well, it’s definitely a step into the future but i never have problems with bandwith, so i think it’s not necessary to have 200 mb/s, unless you want to download music and movies – which is illegal anyway.
Smokin’! I love it when the internet just keep getting faster. I’m sure there will be a point where the quickness ability will taper off, but for now it can definitely use some improvement.
Every broadband supplier has the same thing to say. They make huge promises about offering high speeds of downloading and internet access. But when it comes to reality, we only get a fraction of what is promised. ABI Research recently came out with some interesting suggestions of creating micro and pico cells with 4G base stations for more efficient bandwidth management. Unless all ISPs work on enhancing their infrastructure, high broadband speeds will not be possible.
Virgin Media will publicly demonstrate its upcoming 200Mb/s broadband service this weekend. VM’s demo follows hot on the heels of the expansion of its 200Mb/s trial into Coventry. The test set-up is already operating in Kent and has been since the summer of 2009
wow – can’t wait to those connections become the normal internet connection.
Tv will transform, and games can be huge, and more interactive…
The future – here i come

I think Japanese may already connections at this speed.
We in the US are way behind the UK, and you in the UK are behind Japan. High speed nternet access has become a key infrastructure that must be properly resourced for future economic development.
Thanks for the great post about internet connect speeds. Testing out 200Mb/s sounds pretty darn fast to me. I wish Virgin Media would do these test near my location.

How awesome! 200MB! It would be cool to have the whole world on the same speed. The world is getting smaller and faster all the time.
Its has been great news. There are several broadband providers in uk like Orange, O2 and BT, Now the virgin media extended to 200mb broadband connection. Although BT has introduced Fibre optic network through fibre- to- the cabinet technology, it provides around 40mb speed.
I use Virgin and agree that they are the fastest, but unfortunately not everyone in the U.K. has access to fibre optic broadband which is what Virgin provide.
As soon as you get into the realms of non-fibre optic broadband then it’s a whole different scenario. Providers claiming speeds of 10, 20mbs when in reality you would be lucky to get 10% of that.
It’s actually criminal that they are still allowed to get away with saying it. There has been talk of clamping down on false claims for years not but nothing has come to surface. While I would love to see 200mb fibre optic broadband across the whole of the U.K. I think a more realistic goal would be to force current copper-wire providers to up their game and give ordinary consumers a respectable broadband speed.
